Vietnam, Netherlands enhance horticulture cooperation

The Netherlands will promote cooperation with Vietnam in farming of vegetables, flowers and fruits, helping Vietnam to join the global supply chain, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

At the Vietnam-Netherlands Hortibusiness Platform held on Wednesday in Hanoi, Deputy Minister Vu Van Tam said that to be successful in the global horticulture supply chain, Vietnam was in need of international supports. The assistance from the Netherlands will help Vietnam in selecting and creating varieties of vegetables, flowers and fruits, as well as in securing advanced technologies in clean vegetable farming.

Regarding the flower farming, according to Dutch experts, Vietnam has diverse weather conditions and thus can grow a great number of flower varieties suitable with tropical, subtropical and temperate weather. Several types of flowers imported from the Netherlands and grown in northern provinces since 2008 like lily, tulip and gladiolus are highly adaptable to Vietnam’s weather conditions.

The Government and the agriculture ministry have paid more attention to flower and ornamental plant farming, facilitated foreign enterprises to build their brands such as Hasfarm and Appolo. However, Dutch experts said that Vietnam needed to accelerate the commercialization of flower varieties and farming technologies as well as cooperate in developing varieties and growing flowers for export.

According to Dutch Vice Minister for Agriculture Hans Hoogeveen, some experts from Wageningen University’s Plant Research International will come to Vietnam to give guidance about growing lily, tulip and gladiolus.

Vietnam and the Netherlands will sign a memorandum of understanding on horticulture cooperation at the end of the platform today.
